Cracked, stained or blown render on the front of the house?
Manchester weather is hard on exterior walls. Old sand-and-cement render cracks as the building moves, water gets behind it, and before long whole patches sound hollow and start pushing off the wall.
Aside from how it looks, failed render stops doing its actual job — keeping driving rain out of the brickwork behind it. Sorting it protects the property as well as smartening it up.
What re-rendering a house involves
The wall is assessed first — how much of the existing render has failed, whether there's damp getting in, and what the background is. Old failed render is hacked off back to a sound edge.
Beads are fixed at corners, around openings and at the bottom edge so lines stay straight and water sheds away from the wall properly. Where needed, mesh reinforcement is used to control cracking.
The render is then applied in coats and finished to the texture you want — flat, floated, or a textured scraped finish. Work is done off scaffolding where height requires it and kept off the windows, doors and paths below.

How do I know if my render has blown?
Tap it. Sound render rings solid; blown render sounds hollow and often shows hairline cracks or bulges. Hollow patches will eventually let water behind them, so they're worth dealing with.
Can render be patched instead of replaced?
Where damage is localised, yes — the failed area is cut out, re-rendered and blended. If large areas sound hollow, taking the wall back and starting again gives a better long-term result.
What time of year can rendering be done?
Most of the year, but not in frost or heavy rain, and it needs time to cure. Weather affects scheduling more than anything else on exterior work.
Do I need scaffolding?
For anything above ground-floor height, yes. That's factored into the job when it's priced so there are no surprises.
