Most people don't go looking for a plasterer until something forces the issue — paint that keeps showing every bump, a ceiling that's cracked, an extension sat waiting, or a room that was papered over for thirty years and looks it once the paper comes off.
Plastering is the layer everything else sits on. Get it flat and even and the decorating looks after itself. Get it wrong and no amount of paint hides it.
What the work actually involves
The starting point is the state of the existing surface. Loose or blown plaster is taken off, damp or dusty backgrounds are treated so the new plaster grips, and any deep areas are built out with a base coat until the wall runs true.
Once the background is right, finish plaster goes on and is worked through several passes with the trowel as it sets — that's what leaves the polished, paint-ready surface rather than a flat-but-rough one.
On bigger jobs the order matters: first fix electrics and plumbing done, boarding complete, then plastering, so nothing has to be cut back into afterwards.

Do I need plastering or just a skim?
If the wall is sound but rough or patchy, a skim over the top is usually enough. If plaster is blown, missing or the wall has been hacked back to brick, it needs building back up with a base coat first. Photos make this easy to judge.
Can you plaster a whole house?
Yes. Whole-property work is regularly taken on, usually room by room so the job runs in a sensible order alongside any other trades.
Do you clean up afterwards?
Floors are covered, and waste and mixing equipment are cleared as work finishes. Plastering is dusty by nature but the room shouldn't be left in a state.
